In honour of Peter
Cottontail and the oncoming Easter season, I'm dedicating this post
to some of my favourite organic cotton items available right here

Cotton
is a great choice for clothing and many types of textile products
because it is soft, breathable and natural. It looks great, feels
great, and it can last for a very long time. But according to
the Organic Trade Association (2011), "cotton covers 2.5% of the
world's cultivated land yet uses 16% of the world's insecticides".
That's more than any other single major crop!
The alternative is to buy organic
cotton, which has all the benefits of conventional cotton but without
the pesticides. In short, organic cotton is better for you and better for
the environment. So without further ado, here are my top three

I recently treated myself to one of these robes, and I absolutely love it! The jersey knit cotton is just the right weight for the spring and summer season and it is extremely soft against my skin.
My organic cotton robe is the perfect thing to throw on after a relaxing bath or a nice hot shower because it absorbs excess moisture and keeps me nice and warm. If I had my way of ways, I would never take it off! So if you love to lounge, then this is the organic cotton item for you. -

I'm cheating a bit with this one because it's a blend of organic cotton and organic bamboo but I'm including it anyway. I simply love the figure flattering and feminine design of this halter dress by Jonano. It makes me all that much more excited for the warmer weather so that I can take it for a spin!

I've written about the importance of
supporting the organic cotton industry before, but my recent
discovery of the Organic Cotton Initiative has reminded me of one
very important point that I failed to elaborate on. Organic cotton
is great for the environment and great for our health, but it's also
great for putting the power back in the hands of the farmer.
It's very simple, really. Organic
farmers don't use genetically modified seeds which means that they
have the power and freedom to choose sustainable farming methods over
conventional methods which rely heavily on chemicals and pesticides.
Here's what the folks over at the
Organic Cotton Initiative had to say:
“Organic cotton production never uses
GM seed. The small-scale farmers who produce the majority of our
cotton need reliability, not high risks. Using low external inputs
that are locally available, organic allows farmers to work within
their limits and with their environment, in a sustainable way.
Organic cotton puts choices in the farmer's hands.”

While I've always been a big fan of the mini skirt, I admit that it's probably not be the best choice for an office environment. A grey pants suit on the other hand, is a very professional choice but it's slightly too conservative for a 5 à 7.
My solution? The always fashionable, super-flattering, sexy but subtle pencil skirt. Here is my personal recipe for the perfect work to weekend outfit:
- Start with a low to medium height heel and add a pair of sheer nylons (substitute with woollen stockings in a pinch).
- Zip into your favourite knee-length pencil skirt and button up a tailored sleeveless blouse making sure to tuck in at the bottom.
- Next add a fitted cardigan and/or a cotton blazer for extra warmth.
- Finish off with a colourful silk scarf and head for the door!

Thankfully, there is an increasing awareness amongst hippies and non-hippies alike of some of the benefits of going au naturel. If you’re sitting somewhere on the fence, here are just a few of the reasons why you might want to consider committing to organic:
- Organic is good for the environment: Organic farmers work with nature instead of against it. Wildlife is encouraged by including forage crops (plants consumed by animals) in rotation and by preserving wetlands and other fragile ecosystems (Organic Trade Association, 2011). Plus, did you know that more energy is now used to produce synthetic fertilizers than to till, cultivate and harvest all of the crops in the U.S. (Island Superfoods, 2012)?
- Organic is good for you: According to the Organic Trade Association (2011), many of the pesticides that are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency were approved before they were linked through extensive research to cancer and other serious illnesses. 8.5 million tons of pesticides are dumped on cotton fields every year in America alone (AchooAllergy.com). If you want to prevent any more of these harmful chemicals from getting into the air, soil, water, and your body, stick to organic produce and durable goods.
- Organic is good for the ‘little guy’: The USDA reported that half of U.S. farm production in 1997 came from only 2% of farms (Organic Trade Association, 2011). Many small farms rely on organic agriculture as it provides an alternative market where producers can charge a fair price for their hard work.
I could probably write a book on all of the reasons why organic is best but the bottom line is that it truly is the way that nature intended.
